Vitens Selects ABB for Water Supply Automation Upgrade

Vitens, the largest drinking water supplier in the Netherlands, has chosen ABB to develop a new process automation system to modernize operations across approximately 250 sites. The project will upgrade around 200,000 I/O connectors, enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The initial phase involves a pilot project, after which the system will be rolled out across all Vitens production sites over seven years.

ABB will implement its ABB Ability™ System 800xA® Distributed Control System to unify operations, reduce maintenance costs, and improve monitoring of water quality, flow rates, and leak detection. The system will also boost cyber security and streamline data management across Vitens' extensive network of distribution pipelines.

Vitens plans to adopt the latest industry standards for process automation and cyber security, supported by ABB’s ongoing technology updates. This collaboration marks a significant step in modernizing water infrastructure while enhancing system reliability and safety.
