Recent analysis from Schneider Electric, conducted with Bluefield Research, suggests that industry could significantly impact U.S. water sustainability through increased efficiency. The findings indicate that over a third of U.S. states are currently experiencing "medium to high" or "extremely high" water stress, with levels projected to rise further by 2050. Schneider Electric’s report states that automation and digital solutions may improve water efficiency in industrial operations by up to 40%, which could help manage rising water demands.
According to Schneider Electric, the energy sector is the largest industrial consumer of freshwater, withdrawing nearly 52 billion gallons daily, with sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food and beverage industries also seeing substantial usage. The company reports that its EcoStruxure™ Platform, alongside other tools, aims to support data-driven efficiency and water recirculation measures to optimize water use and limit waste across industrial operations.
“Industry has a responsibility to adopt more circular water management practices to preserve resources for the future,” said Aamir Paul, President of North America Operations at Schneider Electric.
