Filtralite® in Use at Finnish Wastewater Plant

Filtralite® Clean is used as part of the final treatment stage at the Kakolanmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant in Turku, Finland. Operated by Turun seudun puhdistamo Oy, the facility treats wastewater from around 300,000 residents and local industry, processing approximately 90,000 cubic metres per day. The plant, located underground in a rock cavern, combines mechanical, chemical and biological processes to achieve high levels of cleaning efficiency.

The final stage of treatment involves 20 filtration tanks, each containing a filtration bed made up of half a metre of quartz sand and one metre of Filtralite® Clean MC 2.5–4, a granular filter material manufactured by Leca in Raelingen, Norway. According to the company, the material helps remove approximately half of the remaining phosphorus and solids in the polishing process.

Process engineer Jouko Tuomi from Turun seudun puhdistamo Oy says the Filtralite® media has performed well over the last decade. "Our polishing filters remove half of the amount of phosphorus and solids. There has been no need yet to replace the Filtralite layer," he said.
