The Alexandria West wastewater treatment plant in Egypt has undergone a major pump modernisation to enhance its operational capacity and long-term reliability. Two high-efficiency Sewatec SPN pumps supplied by KSB were installed to increase the plant’s inlet capacity significantly. Each pump is capable of handling flows up to 9,000 litres per second with a head of about 100 metres, driven by adjustable-speed electric motors to optimise performance under varying hydraulic conditions.
Due to their substantial weight of approximately ten tonnes each, the pumps were installed in separate components—volute casing and back pull-out unit—before being reassembled on site to accommodate existing infrastructure constraints. The plant serves Alexandria, a city of more than five million people, with a daily capacity of up to 462,000 cubic metres. The new pumps also feature large free passages, ensuring high reliability in managing raw wastewater flows.
