Torishima (Hong Kong) Limited has received an order from Hong Kong’s Drainage Services Department for eight rainwater pumps for a new pumping station serving the Sha Tau Kok area. The installation forms part of a broader programme to reinforce drainage capacity following the severe flooding caused by a 2018 super typhoon. The facility will include a long-reach drainage channel, new seawall and underground storage, with the pumps forming a key component in the station’s planned 9.1 m³-per-second discharge capacity.
A central factor in securing the order was Torishima’s vortex control technology, incorporating a double-suction bellmouth and a vortex-preventing ring. This system is designed to stabilise pump performance during both low-water operation and high-flow events by reducing the formation of submerged and surface vortices. Already used extensively in Japan, this project marks its first application in Hong Kong, reflecting the growing international uptake of the company’s approach to optimising large-scale drainage infrastructure.
