Arup Supports Equatic’s Ocean Carbon Removal Scale-Up

Arup is providing technical and advisory services to help Equatic scale its ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology. Equatic’s patented electrolytic process enhances the ocean’s natural ability to absorb and permanently store carbon while also generating carbon-negative hydrogen. The company is assessing global deployment opportunities, building on pilot plants in California and Singapore and a demonstration plant that began construction in Singapore in 2024.

Arup is supporting Equatic’s expansion by conducting site and infrastructure assessments, developing digital tools, advising on planning and permitting, and providing stakeholder management expertise. The company says its modular approach will allow for systematic and scalable deployment, with the next iteration—a commercial-scale plant—expected to remove over 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually while producing 3,600 tons of hydrogen. Equatic aims to achieve CDR at less than $100 per ton by 2030 and ultimately scale to gigaton-level reductions globally.

“With a focus on sustainability, Arup is proud to deliver a suite of engineering services to help scale Equatic’s innovative technology, which aims to reduce emissions at an impactful pace to avoid the worst impacts of climate change,” said Martin Howell, Associate Principal, Arup.
