SPH Engineering Supports UAWOS Hydrometry Project

SPH Engineering has contributed its drone expertise to the Horizon Europe-funded UAWOS consortium, which is focused on developing contactless methods for river hydrometry. The company says its work has supported the integration of radar altimetry, Doppler sensors, and tethered sonar into aerial systems used for measuring water level, velocity, and bathymetry across several river sites in Europe.

According to SPH Engineering, field protocols have been established and tested on rivers in Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Italy, with drone-based data collection validated against traditional techniques. The company also notes it will support upcoming campaigns in 2025, including operations on the Orco, Ouémé, Ogun, and Isar rivers, where UAS platforms will assist with hydrological assessments under varied flow conditions.

A recent case study on the Torne River in Sweden highlighted the use of SPH Engineering’s drone systems to support flood model development in collaboration with SMHI and other consortium members.
