South West Water Expands Real-Time Overflow Monitoring

UK-based utility South West Water has completed the rollout of high-frequency, real-time monitoring across its stormwater overflow network. The company states that all 1,342 of its overflow sites are now equipped with Event Duration Monitors (EDMs), with some units capturing data as often as every 10 seconds—far exceeding the typical industry standard of 15-minute intervals. This enhanced visibility is intended to support quicker operational response and help limit environmental impact.

Despite extreme weather in 2024, South West Water reports a year-on-year reduction in storm overflows and credits its expanded monitoring programme as a key factor. In one case, real-time data allowed the company to identify short, frequent spills at a high-priority site and invest directly in new storage infrastructure and filtration to address the issue. The company says these data-driven interventions are shaping its £760 million storm overflow investment programme over the next five years.

“Real-time data is transforming how we care for our environment. By seeing what’s happening in our network every few seconds, we can act faster, plan smarter, and invest where it matters most. Even in the face of record rainfall, this technology has helped us reduce spills and protect bathing waters — and it’s only the beginning.” said CEO Susan Davy.
