Toray Backs Next-Gen Desalination in Saudi

Toray Industries has supplied reverse osmosis membranes for the Shuaibah 3 Independent Water Plant (IWP), a large-scale seawater desalination facility in western Saudi Arabia, through its subsidiary Toray Membrane Middle East LLC. With a daily potable water output of 600,000 cubic meters, the plant supplies Mecca, Jeddah, Taif, and Bahah. It replaces an energy-intensive evaporation process with RO technology powered in part by a 65-megawatt peak solar system.

The company says the conversion will cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 45 million tons and save about 22 million barrels of crude oil each year. Toray highlights that the project is supporting Saudi Vision 2030’s sustainability goals, while aligning with Toray Vision 2030. Its water treatment technologies are used globally for drinking water, industrial, agricultural, and wastewater reuse applications.

Toray states that it will continue to expand its membrane range and strengthen technical support through its Middle East Water Treatment Tech Center, aiming to meet rising desalination needs in the region.
