Filtralite® Pure Boosts Palmachim Desalination Plant Output

The Palmachim Desalination Plant in Israel has significantly increased its production capacity following the installation of Filtralite® Pure in its pre-treatment filters. Originally planning a 50% expansion in 2009, the plant achieved the targeted output without constructing additional filtration units. Filtralite Pure’s integration into dual media filters allowed filtration velocity to rise from 7 m/h to 12 m/h while extending runtime between backwashes from 30 hours to 200 hours.

The upgraded filtration system also contributed to reduced biofouling of reverse osmosis membranes and improved water quality, with silt density index values dropping to around 2.0, occasionally as low as 1.5. Cartridge filters previously replaced monthly at 20-micron rating are now 5-micron filters, changed only twice a year, resulting in direct savings of approximately €300,000 annually, alongside broader operational cost reductions that reach into the millions.
