ACCIONA Open de España Achieves Positive Water and Carbon Footprint

The 2024 ACCIONA Open de España will mark a significant milestone as the first sporting event to boast both a positive water and carbon footprint. ACCIONA plans to generate 10% more clean water than the tournament consumes by utilizing desalination at its plant in Spain’s Júcar Basin, thus relieving local aquifers from additional stress. In addition to compensating the tournament’s water use, the company will offset CO2 emissions by planting trees and utilizing sustainable practices, continuing its long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility.

Since 2021, ACCIONA has collaborated with the event, steadily reducing its environmental impact. This year, the company will also enhance urban reforestation efforts through the Miyawaki method, promoting more resilient forest ecosystems in Madrid. The 2023 edition of the tournament had an economic impact of €19.4 million in Madrid, and ACCIONA has planted 8,000 trees over the last three editions, further contributing to its sustainability goals.

ACCIONA highlights its efforts with initiatives such as the 'Emissions Under Par Award,' which offsets both water and carbon footprints for the tournament winner and their caddie, underscoring its leadership in sustainability practices across major events.
