acciona.org and Centro Arcoíris have launched a wastewater and sanitation project in the Bajos de Haina municipality of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. Co-financed by the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID), the initiative will serve more than 4,500 people in the Bella Vista and Villa Penca neighborhoods. It includes the construction of six wastewater treatment facilities, improvements to household water connections, and urban drainage upgrades to reduce flooding and water pollution.
A community-based approach will support long-term maintenance, with local residents trained to monitor water efficiency and quality. The project aligns with the Dominican government's infrastructure efforts and complements existing investments by the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage (INAPA). Before its launch, a significant portion of households in the area lacked reliable access to drinking water and sanitation.
Centro Arcoíris has previously implemented sanitation and flood risk reduction measures in these neighborhoods, while acciona.org recently introduced the Light at Home rural electrification program in the country. More information on the wastewater initiative is available on the companies’ websites.
